Last Wednesday, the Connecticut State Capitol hosted a unique tribute to the Lubavitcher Rebbe, marking his 30th yahrtzeit. Representatives from the state’s 26 Chabad centers gathered in the Senate Chambers in Hartford, where elected officials spoke about the Rebbe’s continued impact on the state and its Jewish community.
“The Rebbe taught that each one of us can make a positive impact on the world around us,” State Comptroller Sean Scanlon said as he led the assembled in a charity-giving ceremony. “We need the Rebbe’s message now, more than ever.”
Rabbi Yisrael Deren, regional director of the Chabad Lubavitch of Western and Southern New England, shared the import of the Rebbe’s life and teachings that resonate today.
A highlight of the event was “Songs of the Soul,” a live rendition of the niggunim—chassidic melodies—taught by the Rebbe. The state’s Chabad rabbis—joined by students from the state’s Jewish schools and yeshivas—gathered on the Senate Floor for a lively chassidic dance.
“This event brought into focus the expansion of the Rebbe’s efforts locally and globally,” said Rabbi Joseph Gopin, Director of Chabad of Greater Hartford. “It’s a true testament to the power of the Jewish spirit.”
