Millions of television viewers in Kazakhstan gained insight into the country's Jewish community earlier this week, thanks to a nationally broadcasted talk with Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gershovitz, a Chabad Lubavitch emissary to this region.
Gershovitz spoke about the recent Jewish holidays and the traditions associated with their celebration.
The program, which aired on the state TV channel, featured a transliterated interview with Rabbi Gershovitz, the Israeli Ambassador Ran Yishay and the Head of the Jewish Agency in Kazakhstan, Iosef Leibovitch. In the spirit of recently-celebrated holidays, the interview took place in a Sukka, which was built beside the Ohr Avner Chabad Jewish Community Center in Almaty.
The broadcasting of such a program on national TV highlights the national uniqueness of this ethnic minority, an important factor in preventing xenophobia or prejudice, said te Jewish Agency representative.
The Jewish community of Kazakhstan is a member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS.
