The Jewish School of Cannes boasts 140 students, from kindergarten to junior high school, who come from all over the region.

A major project to extend the building was started in 2016, to double the area of the school, to 1,200 square meters was recently completed. The inauguration was an opportunity to tour the magnificent premises, as well as the new playground on the roof terrace.

Many personalities made the trip, including Mr. Patrick Petit-Ohayon President of the France Jewish Educational Organization, Rabbi Yossef Matusof from Toulouse, Rabbi Yossef Pinson from Nice, Rabbi Reuven Matusof from Lichka Loubavitch in Paris.

The festivities were followed by a musical performance by the students, the cutting of the ribbon, a tour of the premises, and a hearty buffet.

"No one will change the past." Rabbi Lau said, "but we have the power, and the duty, to change the future." He was applauded with a standing ovation, and tears could be seen streaming down the eyes of many people. In the assembly was a family whose father was interred in Buchenwald with Rabbi Lau.

Frejus-St. Raphael, a 45-minute drive from Cannes, is home to a small Jewish community. A magnificent mikvah was opened there, which will service the local community and the many tourists that come in the summer season.

The local Jewish community was present for this historic event, and director Rabbi Meir Altabe thanked the Rabbinical Center of Europe and the Mikvah Tahara organization for their support in this project.

Rabbi Lau spoke of the history of this place: 2,000 years ago, Frejus was an important Roman city, and it is known that Jews lived there at the time. "Frejus has been waiting 2,000 years for the construction of a Mikvah." he said.
