Governors in States all across the Union are proclaiming March 27th 2018, Education and Sharing Day, “in recognition of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson’s outstanding and lasting contributions toward education, morality and acts of charity throughout the world.”
The practice was established in 1978 when the US Congress asked then President Carter to pay tribute to Rabbi Schneerson, known as the Lubavitcher Rebbe, for his efforts towards a better education for all Americans. The date corresponding to the 11th of Nissan on the hebrew calendar which is the Rebbe’s birthday, was chosen to be proclaimed annually as ‘National Education and Sharing Day.’ On this day the Rebbe wrote to Congress that, “we can neither be satisfied nor slacken our efforts” so long as “there is still one child that does not receive an adequate education.”
Today, on the fortieth annual National Education and Sharing Day, Governors have issued individual proclamations pointing to the Rebbe’s belief in an education that includes a focus on ethical and moral character building as an example which they strive to follow. As Illinois Governor, Bruce Rauner notes, “We recall the memory of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who worked to teach generations of young men and women the value of strong character.”
Governor David Y Ige of Hawaii used this opportunity to note “the contribution of the Rebbe’s representatives in Hawaii and their 30 years of service to the community, creating an environment where ethical responsibilities are emphasised in education.”
