Shabbat Dinner in London Draws Hundreds

LONDON, UK

Friends of Lubavitch are being asked to arrange regular Friday-night social events after 300 young Jews attended a lively Shabbat dinner last weekend at a top London venue.

The dinner and social event at the Regent’s Park Marriott Hotel was for 25- to 35-year-olds, three-quarters of whom were single, said Friends of Lubavitch associate director Rabbi Yosef Vogel, who hosted it with his wife Rivkeh and his brother, Rabbi Mendy Vogel and his wife Sarit.

Rabbi Yosef said guests — who included Israelis and visitors from several European countries — had attended a Kabbalat Shabbat before the dinner, and continued to socialise until the early hours.

“The evening was a chance for young Jews — not religious shul-goers — to recharge their Jewish identity, and meet other young Jews.

“People are asking us to do this every other week. We may not be able to manage that, but we are holding other events throughout the year, including a Lag B’omer barbecue.”

One guest, Darren Sims, director of an online marketing company, said: “I can’t wait for Lubavitch to host the next Shabbat dinner in what has become a ‘must-go’ event for any young Jew in London.”
