New Student Center To Be Dedicated at Florida International University

MIAMI, FL

February 25, 2007

The Chabad Jewish Student Center at Florida International University, known to students as ChabadFIU, will be celebrating the dedication of their new student center near the FIU University Park campus, on Sunday, March 11, beginning at 11:00 am.

ChabadFIU opened its doors in August of 2004 and quickly outgrew the townhouse they rented just west of the University Park campus. The purchase of the spacious new center, at 10031 SW 15 Terrace, a short walk from the campus dormitories, will enable the Jewish Student Center to accommodate more students at their programs, and will be more accessible to the Jewish student population.

The purchase of the new center was made possible by the generous contribution of Mr. Moshe Tabacinic, a Bal Harbour philanthropist.  The center will be named “The Tabacinic Chabad House.”

A new Torah Scroll will be completed at the dedication, and will be the first for the new synagogue Chabad has established.

New York businessman Mr. Mendel Fischer sponsored the new Torah.

Dr. Modesto A. Maidique, President of FIU as well as other prominent faculty and staff will be on hand. The event is open to all students and their families, Alumni, and supporters.

Says Rabbi Levi Friedman, founder and executive director of ChabadFIU: “the dedication of the Tabacinic Chabad House combined with the dedication of a new Torah, speaks eloquently of the unique commitment and combined efforts of University, Community, Students and Chabad. The new, permanent center will be a physical, cultural and spiritual ‘home away from home’ for the students at FIU.”
