Senior Chabad Representative to Tunis, Dies

Rabbi Nissen Pinson, Chabad-Lubavitch representative to Tunis since 1960, died Monday in Nice, France, at age 89.

Rabbi Pinson was born in Charkov, Russia, and studied at Chabad underground yeshivas until he emigrated to France. In 1960, he was sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of blessed memory, to serve Tunis’s Jewish community.

Rabbi Pinson developed many Jewish institutions in Tunis, including a boys’ yeshiva, a pre-school, a day school, a mikveh, a Jewish library, a synagogue, and more.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rochel Pinson, and five children, sons and daughters who all serve as Chabad representatives in their respective cities: Rabbi Y. Y Pinson, Nice, France; Mrs. Feige Hecht, Nice, France; Mrs. Shterna Matusof, Cannes, France; Rabbi Nochum Pinson, Burnoy, France; Rabbi Shmuel Pinson, Brussels, Belgium; sisters—Mrs. Sonia Kaplan, Jerusalem; Mrs. Sima Itkin, New York, and Mrs. V. Pinson, Kfar Chabad.
