150 Year-Old Melbourne Synagogue Appoints Chabad Rabbi

Melbourne, Australia

December 21, 2007

The recent appointment of Chabad Rabbi Dovid Gutnick opens a new chapter for the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation's synagogue.

As it enters into its 150th year, Gutnick has plans to take Melbourne's oldest shul into some innovative directions, including introducing lay sermons into and music (during the weekdays) into the synagogue life.

Gutnick has attracted new members in the past several weeks since his arrival, bringing the total membership to approximately 200 congregants.

"We see a very bright future for Rabbi Dovid Gutnick," Danny Segal, a congregant, told the Australian Jewish News.
