Soldiers were grateful for the tefillin, a special prayer and learning book, and tzitzit garments that they received as gifts.

In a rare, special appearance, Major General Yoav Galant, Southern Commander in charge of Israeli operations in Gaza, joined the celebration and completed one of the Torah's final letters before donning tefillin himself. He was flanked by Givati Brigade Commander Colonel Ilan Malka, other regional officers and members of Agudah L'Man HaChayal.

"The soldiers tell me that these events give them energy and encourage them to continue," said Rabbi Ofen. "It helps them knowing they have our support."
