Jewish Victims Identified Among Dead in Perm Fire

Perm, Russia

December 7, 2009

(lubavitch.com) As Russia mourned 113 victims killed in a Perm nightclub, the city’s rabbi, Zalman Deitsch, confirmed that two of the dead were Jewish.

President Dmitry Medvedev declared Monday a national day of mourning. The fire, which erupted early Saturday morning, turned the packed nightclub into an inferno. In addition to those who died from the fire, 121 were injured and airlifted to Moscow hospitals, where they were visited Monday by Prime Minister Putin.

Rabbi Deitsch verified the names of the dead against Perm’s Jewish community list. He visited the families of the Jewish victims, and has coordinated arrangements with them for Jewish burials on Tuesday.
