When Michelle Nourmand, an eleventh grade student, passed away last June from a brain tumor, she left her classmates and the students at the Wheatley School in shock. Last week the students of her school’s Key Club chose to memorialize her at the East Williston School District Walkathon for Charity.
Nourmand, an honor student at the Old Westbury school, was described by friends as a popular, well liked girl. Her rabbi, Yaakov Wilansky, youth director at Chabad of Roslyn, spoke of her as “A very warm, positive and friendly person, who got along with everyone and had many friends in the school.”
Although she suffered over the past year and a half, Wilansky says she continued to volunteer for the Friendship Circle, an organization that works with children with special needs, and was an active member of the local Cteen club. In a tribute to her, some 120 students and community members who adored her and cherish her memory, pledged a commitment to enhance their own Jewish identity.
Last Wednesday the Club presented a $1,586.00 check to Chabad of Roslyn.
