It was all smiles when preschool children and their families made Pies for Joy for seniors in time for Thanksgiving. The Gan Camarillo Preschool and Smile on Seniors, two programs by Chabad of Camarillo, California, joined hands on Sunday to say thanks.
“We teach a lot about sharing, giving to others and respecting our elders. Pies for Joy brings this, in a fun way, to life for the youngsters attending our preschool,” says Leah Lang, Chabad representative to Camarillo. “We do this just before Thanksgiving, so we could give gratitude to those who preceded us and made our world the way it is, possible.”
Camarillo is blessed with many seniors, explains Lang, and many of them are homebound with no family members. Participants baked two pies each, one to take home and another to give out. In addition to the preschool families, many from the community joined and learn about the practice of giving as taught at the Chabad preschool.
Volunteers will deliver the pies over the next week.
“For many this may be a first time visiting seniors in the area. It is just a pleasure meeting the elderly, who have so much to impart to the younger generation. After going once to bring a pie, many join the Smile on Seniors volunteer program and continue visiting regularly,” Lang says.
