There are very few things that can stop teens from sleeping in on Sundays, but Los Alamitos Hebrew High has them jumping out of bed. Now in its 14th year, the program offers an accredited Hebrew language provides an excellent opportunity for high school students to earn foreign language credits while receiving a meaningful Hebrew education.

The kicker: the course that includes a field trip to Taa-eem Grill where students get to sample Israel’s culinary delights. Like shawarma, for example. The popular Middle-Eastern savory food is made by alternately stacking strips of fat and seasoned meat on a vertical spit. An onion, a tomato, or a halved lemon is sometimes placed at the top for decoration. The meat is roasted slowly on all sides as the spit rotates in front of, or over, a flame for hours at, yielding delicious results.

Hebrew High students make the annual trip to Melrose Ave in Los Angeles where they sample Taa-eem Grill’s vast menu and hear a talk from the store’s owner in Hebrew.

The program is offered by Chabad of Los Alamitos, and its Hebrew courses are currently listed on the University of California’s website of accredited courses.

Enrollment opened on May 5th, 2017 for the next school year.
